Today, we induct a forgotten fragment of the streaming revolution: the Netflix Streaming Disc for PlayStation 3 — a physical disc that unlocked on-demand movies before apps ruled the world.

In 2009, as President Barack Obama took office and Avatar dazzled theaters, PlayStation 3 owners were mailing in for this peculiar Blu-ray workaround. Why? Because Netflix hadn’t yet built a native app — and this disc was the key to early streaming magic.
